How will Pohnpei’s birds deal with future forest changes?
This project models bird species’ responses to long-term and large-scale landscape change on Pohnpei Islands, Federated States of Micronesia. Data from past bird surveys spanning back to 1983, combined with 30 years of vegetation mapping, informed modeling for the islands’ endemic bird population. The results are a spatially explicit predictive model of species change to guide reforestation and forest bird management over the long term. This is the first effort of its kind in the Pacific Islands outside of Hawai‘i.
